Abstract:
In the international arena, debates on democracy, human rights and social juctice are strongly influenced by student voices. Political student organisations as well as value based student structures and nationalist movements have played a strong role in promoting institutional democracy. This paper firstly explores and explains links between students and other citizens, the role of youth and society, the opportunity and accountability structures that exist in various societies and the overall vision for students. This research involved an examination of voting patterns in student representative council (SRC) elections, and an assessment of democracy and student rights at twenty South African universities and technikons over a three-year period between 2002-2004. The study aims to understand what democratic practices students follow and provides an overview of trends characterising elections from 2002-2004 at public HEIs in South Africa.
