Abstract:
I will briefly sketch what I see as the genealogy of ‘community engagement’ in the South African academy. It does not claim to be a history, only a schematic trajectory, and it will be partial. Nevertheless, hopefully it can indicate in what ways ‘engagement’ as a value has been taken up by the academy, and perhaps offer some pointers as to where it might go in future.
