Education and unemployment of youths in Nigeria: causes, impacts and suggestions.

Oyebade, S.A.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the critical state of unemployment in Nigeria. Some of the key factors include the politicization of formal education that led to the production of persons with little or no relevant skills; the economic recession that led to inadequacy of funds, lack of appropriate inputs, poor conditions of service; and poor economic planning on the part of the nation’s leaders. It points out some of the poor policies such as free education, which resulted into over production of labor without corresponding increases in job opportunities in established industries for graduates. The failure of the education sector to forecast the manpower needs of the Nigerian economy is highlighted among lead causes. It concludes with solutions such as the need to restructure the economic and education systems; to encourage and support self employment through job creation for the jobless; and to repatriate Nigerian wealth stored in foreign banks by corrupt leaders among many others.
