Some thoughts about tertiary education in Nigeria: historical lessons from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology ( LAUTECH )

Oke, Olusegun L.; Ajirotutu, Cheryl S.

Abstract:
Olusegun Oke's chapter examines the problems of technology, and the need to understand that universities set specifically for technology should be understood for such mission.  In providing a detailed explanation of the missions of technological universities, this author chronicles the problems associated with all universities in a struggling economy, which typifies most postcolonial African nations.  Oke explains that university administrators should concern themselves with the products of their institutions, thus cannot compromise quality with politics and other institutional pressure that are endemic of African universities, especially Nigeria.  For example, if space and staff originally designed for 500 students are being utilized by 3000 students or more, and there are no plans or the means to create additional space or employ additional staff, institutions face a crisis of a high magnitude. These problems are just a foretaste of a higher magnitude that is imminent if immediate actions are not taken by leaders of those nations in collaboration with the administrators of those African universities.
