Higher education trends in Eritrea-some implications

This article focuses on the contribution of higher education towards national development in Eritrea, specifically in developing skilled manpower. It reports on the recent expansion of the higher education sector through the implementation of graduate education in tandem with the establishment of eight specialized colleges offering degree and diploma programmes. The University of Asmara's School of Graduate Studies administers the masters programmes of these colleges. The author outlines the importance of graduate research in assisting developmental constraints in Eritrea and stresses the importance of relevance, quality and sustainability as guiding principles for the graduate education programmes.
