Abstract:
This chapter discusses the recruitment of international students into Cameroon higher education institutions. These universities have been operating without international offices and subsequently, student recruitment and concerns have been dealt with in a haphazard manner. The authors discuss the evolution of Cameroon's tertiary institutions and the consequent 1993 Higher Education Reforms policy which enabled the creation of five additonal state universities that were given more academic and management autonomy. This resulted in the optimal use of services and revived and maximised inter-university and international co-operation. The authors examine the strengths and weaknesses of these reforms which have ensured that the Cameroon education system opened its doors to international students, though without a precise policy. The admission criteria into state universities as well as specialized institutions are discussed.
