Abstract:
This report explores how gender equity is impeded in higher education institutions in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda. It is the first study of its kind as policy and research attention have tended to focus on gender and basic education in low-income countries. The five case study institutions were selected for their organisational policies and practices for equality, gender mainstreaming, curriculum innovation, affirmative action and programmes to encourage women into higher education. Three main sources of data was collected namely, statistics and policies; semi-structured interview data and structured non-participant interviews. It was found that gender has a significant impact on academic and professional identity formation. The five case studies reveal that a highly gendered environment exist which impede women's progress as staff and has a detrimental effect on the learning environment for students.
