Internationalisation of a South African university within the African continent: the case of Stellenbosch University

Mavhungu, K.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the author shows that recent political imperatives such as the post-1994 political dispensation in South Africa, the formation of the AU, the SADC Protocol on Education and Training, and NEPAD require higher education institutions in South Africa to establish institutional linkages with their counterparts in the rest of Africa.  It is also demonstrated that in order to achieve this form of internationalisation, a portfolio to co-ordinate international activities in Africa needs to be created within an institution. Stellenbosch University has established such a portfolio which is co-ordinated by its international office.  Various approaches that can be followed in the implementation of such a strategy are discussed.  It is hoped that South African professionals who are involved in international education would gain more insight into the higher education institution environment in the rest of Africa.
