Abstract:
This chapter begins with a brief account of the development of scientific institutions in the colonial and independence periods in Nigeria. It is followed by an analysis of the university system which has played a central role in the emergence of the Nigerian scientific community. The authors discuss the expansion of the Nigerian university system and conclude that this has led to increased tensions between teaching, advanced postgraduate training and research. The chapter also provides a brief overview of the twenty two federal research institutes as well as the qualifications required for its research staff. The authors discuss the extent of Nigerian research output within the African landscape and mention the most productive countries in Sub-Saharan countries in this regard. The impact of Nigerian Science on the nation's economic and social development is analysed. It is concluded that the Nigerian scientific community is in crisis, yet it continues to occupy a place on the scientific stage of Africa.
