Emerging issues in education management in developing countries in the 21st century

Nkata, James L.

Abstract:
This book mentions the many challenges currently facing education and brings into perspective the need for programmes to improve education in developing countries.  These challenges include the necessity to make education and its content relevant  to the needs of clients; the need to improve management techniques; the need to manage education systems more effectively and efficiently as well as the need to make higher education more effective as an instrument of national development.  In chapter one Nkata focuses on the contextual environment of universal primary education programme implementation.   Chapter two examines the concept of educational institutional leadership and the basic leadership skills which a head of an institution should possess to effectively manage it.  In chapter three, the author empahasises the fact that decentralization of the control of education has become the trend in both developing as well as developed countries.  The chapter discusses practical approaches to decentralization, its advantages as well as problems associated with this phenomenon.  Chapter four discusses teacher education and the challenges that inhibit teacher management, and also mentions the impact that curriculum changes have on the teaching profession. Chapter five discusses the theoretical, conceptual and contextual factors which underpin the concept of education for development.  In chapter six, university effectiveness is discussed in the context of organisational effectiveness.
