Activities of existing and functioning library consortia in East, Central and Southern Africa: a report of the case study done on behalf of the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publication (INASP)

Sekabembe, Beatrice

Abstract:
This document is a response to a recommendation made that emphasised library cooperation through consortia.  The aim of this study was to find out existing activities and management of the existing consortia in the SCANUL-ECS region as well as those at different levels of formation.  Nine South African institutional libraries were visited where library directors, staff and students were interviewed.  An in-depth study of the Gauteng and Environs Library Consortium (GAELIC) and the Cape Library Cooperative (CALICO) was carried out. Diagrammatical structures of these consortia are included. The report includes maps and tables of the SCANUL-ECS region, the higher education consortia projects in South Africa, as well as the distribution of library consortia in South Africa. The author concludes that library and information services would be improved through cooperation using the consortia approach.  Useful recommendations are given as the way forward to successful regional library consortia.
