Abstract:
In this chapter, Orivel discusses the higher education system in Francophone Africa and begins with a statistical overview. The 20 Francophone countries located in Sub-Saharan Africa together had 255,000 tertiary students in 1990, a near sevenfold increase since 1970 when only 37,000 were enrolled. The basic characteristics of tertiary education systems have not significantly changed to cope with a radically new context for the graduates. The author mentions the differences between the organisational model adopted by most Francophone tertiary institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa and that of the original French model. There are some similarities between the dichotomy in France regarding higher education with the universities on the one hand and the "Grande Ecoles" on the other. This comparison is provided in the form of a table. The relationship between France and Francophone SSA universities is discussed as well as the attempts to improve the effectiveness of French aid to tertiary education.
