Abstract: Communities such as the University of Zambia have lost many of their members to debilitating illness or death as a result of HIV and AIDS, depriving them of staff on whom they expected to rely for continuity and leadership and of students in whose development the institution’s hopes were vested. In the event of this catastrophe, the university has spearheaded the development of an effective policy document which is directed at mitigating the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The UNZA HIV and AIDS policy addresses the following components: Obligations of the University Council, Responsibility of UNZA Central Administration, Rights of members of staff, Rights of students, Responsibilities of members of staff and students, Teaching and research, Information, education and communication, Counselling and supportive care and Community engagement.
